Civil War Statue Vandalized In Greenpoint Park
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Civil War monument in Brooklyn depicting the USS Monitor has been defaced.
White and yellow paint was thrown on the statue in McGolrick Park at some point on Sunday, Greenpoint community activist Phil DePaolo told 1010 WINS.
"Also, the intials 'JJ' were left in white paint on the ground directly adjacent to the statue which was sort of rubbing salt in the wound," DePaolo said.
The Greenpoint Monitor Statue, which was built in 1938, depicts a man working on the USS Monitor, the legendary ironclad battleship that was built and stationed in Greenpoint.
"There's been a lot of vandalism going on in McGolrick Park so this was sort of the pinnacle of disrespect not only to the statue but to the community," DePaolo said. "It's really angered a lot of people and it's very disheartening."
The Parks Department said a police report has been filed.
A crew is expected to remove the paint on Monday, weather permitting.
