City Slaps Macy's With Subpoena Over Racial Profiling Case
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Macy's has been served a subpoena over its shoplifting protection policies.
The New York City Commission on Human Rights is investigating the store's anti-theft practices following multiple claims of racial profiling from customers.
The commissioner of the agency said the retailer has not been fully cooperating with their investigation.
Macy's and 16 other retailers were the center of a City Council hearing in November after community members and activists urged action amid the racial profiling allegations.
The City Council had set a deadline for the retailers to submit information about how they treat shoppers – including procedures for approaching and detaining people suspected of theft, with the threat of being subpoenaed if the stores failed to do so.
Representatives from Macy's and Barney's did not attend the council hearing; however the retailers did send written statements denying the claims.
