City Releases Renderings Of Planned New City Island Bridge
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Department of Transportation on Monday announced plans to tear down the City Island Bridge in the Bronx and replace it with a new span.
The new cable-stayed City Island Bridge will be on the same alignment as the old one, the department said. The bridge will be constructed with a single tower on the mainland side, the city said.
The new bridge will have one 11-foot lane to carry traffic in each direction, as well as an emergency lane. The new bridge will be about 20 feet wider than the existing one, and will feature standard-lane widths and new bicycle and pedestrian lanes, the city said.
The cost for the new bridge is estimated at $102 million.
Some residents of the area oppose the project, and call it out of scale with other structures in the area.
Construction is expected to take three years. It was not immediately learned when the project will begin.
