City Giving Away 5,000 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Tickets To Families Affected By Sandy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- About 5,000 bleacher seats along the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade route will go to families hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy.
"Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy friends and family and reflect on life's blessings, but this will be a particularly difficult holiday for many New Yorkers who suffered terrible losses as a result of Hurricane Sandy," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press release Thursday.
Local elected officials will handle the distribution of the tickets.
Macy's will provide transportation to and from the parade.
"For 86 years, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has served as a beacon of hope, renewal and entertainment for New Yorkers and the nation," said Amy Kule, Macy's Parade executive producer. "It is our ultimate hope that we can provide some comfort to those most affected by Hurricane Sandy."
The parade begins at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day. It kicks off at 77th Street and Central Park West and heads south, ending at Macy's Herald Square.
Last year's parade featured more than 40 balloons, 27 floats, 800 clowns and 1,600 cheerleaders.
