City Councilman Takes Aim At Skateboarders At Columbus Circle
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Councilman Dan Garodnick wants the city to start cracking down on skateboarding in Columbus Circle.
He claims his office has been inundated with calls from residents complaining that skateboarders threatening the safety of families, children and tourists.
"This park should be open and enjoyed by anybody who wants to use it," Garodnick tells 1010 WINS. "People are staying away from it because they're afraid. That's not how it should be."
Garodnick is calling on the city to step up enforcement of the no-skateboarding rules.
"It's not allowed in this park," Garodnick said. "It's not a crime everywhere, but it's certainly not allowed here."
A Parks Department spokesman told DNAinfo that the agency is "closely communicating with the NYPD on the need for additional enforcement at Columbus Circle."
Police have reportedly already agreed to increase their presence in the area.
Garodnick also suggests adding "small impediments" that would deter skateboarding and make the area safer for pedestrians to navigate.
