City Commemorates 50th Anniversary Of Assassination Of Civil Rights Leader Malcolm X
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The 50th anniversary of the assassination of Civil Rights leader Malcolm X was commemorated by the city of New York and federal officials Saturday.
Malcolm X and his wife Betty both raised their four children in East Elmhurst, Queens.
1010 WINS spoke with Ilyasah Shabazz, Malcolm X's daughter, at the event, who is encouraging people to meet her at any of her public events.
According to a news release, Shabazz—and infant at the time of her father's assassination—was at the Manhattan ballroom where her father's death took place.
Shabazz also unveiled her book, "X," about her father's years as a human rights leader.
"A life lesson that I would want readers to come away with is understanding their own value, understanding that they are worthy of love, that they are worthy of a quality education and after getting all this greatness, that they go out and not only be the best they can be, but they go out and give something back to society," she said.
