Christine Quinn Says She'd Consider Proposal For 'Rivera Ave.'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says she'd consider legislation to rename River Ave. in the Bronx in honor of New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who will call it a career after this season.
That is, if it ever crosses her desk.
"I know many New Yorkers and many Council Members would enthusiastically support renaming River Avenue in his honor," Quinn said in a statement, according to the New York Post. "If a member does propose a bill, it will undergo the same review as all bills do, and I look forward to considering it."
"Rivera Ave.," the brainchild of Mo booster Tom Ferrara, has gained some steam this week thanks to a series of articles in the Post. But there are some who are firmly against it and would like the street near Yankee Stadium to remain River Ave., including WFAN radio co-hosts Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton.
Quinn said baseball's all-time saves leader is "a New Yorker deserving of great recognition and is someone the City should proudly honor."
A Twitter account, @161stRIVERAave, has been created in an effort to promote the proposed name change.
