'The Voice' Singer Christina Grimmie Killed In Shooting Following Concert In Orlando
ORLANDO (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey native and former finalist on "The Voice" has died after she was shot in Orlando.
Singer Christina Grimmie, 22, was signing autographs after performing a concert at the Plaza when police say a gunman walked up to her and shot her, CBS2's Cindy Hsu reported.
"I'm sad, shocked and confused. We love you so much Grimmie," Adam Levine, who coached Grimmie on 'The Voice,' wrote in an Instagram post Saturday morning. "We are all praying hard that you can pull through this...this just isn't fair."
Orlando Police identified the shooter as 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl on Saturday afternoon.
Investigators say Grimmie's brother tackled the shooter, who later shot himself.
Grimmie, a Burlington County native, finished as a top the finalist on season six of "The Voice."
"There are no words," the show wrote on their official Twitter handle. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice."
"Christina was a natural, a gifted talent that comes along so rarely. She was taken from us too soon. This is yet another senseless act of extreme violence. I am left stunned and confused how these things can conceivably continue to happen in our world," Levine said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
Police and witnesses say more people may have been hurt had the brother not stepped in.
According to police, Loibl had two guns. Orlando Police Chief John Mina says that the suspect apparently traveled from another city in Florida to Orlando to confront her.
One hometown friend of Grimmie's told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria the singer was a devout Christian with an amazing talent and had a great heart.
Police said the suspect didn't appear to know Christina Grimmie personally and may have been a deranged fan who targeted her.
The motive is still under investigation.
