Chris Hemsworth Named People Magazine's 'Sexiest Man Alive'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — People magazine has named Chris Hemsworth the "Sexiest Man Alive" of 2014, cheering the Australian actor's rise as hammer-wielding, bonafide hunk in the "Thor" films.
Hemsworth, who also starred as Formula One racer James Hunt in the Ron Howard-directed "Rush" and the "Star Trek" reboots, was unveiled as the winner on Tuesday's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"
When asked who he wanted to thank, Hemsworth told Kimmel his parents, "for putting this together."
He joins a list of hunks with the honor, including Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Patrick Swayze, Sean Connery, Ben Affleck, Channing Tatum and Adam Levine. Mel Gibson, another Australian, was the first in 1985.
The 31-year-old star of "Thor: The Dark World" and his 38-year-old wife, Elsa Pataky of "Fast and Furious 6," have three children. The actor's younger brother, Liam, stars in the "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
Hemsworth told People that the award "bought me a couple of weeks of bragging rights" around the house and with his wife. "I can just say to her, 'Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don't need to do the dishes anymore, I don't need to change nappies. I'm above that. I've made it now.'"
Hemsworth wasn't the only one approving of his selection, students at Adelphi University appeared downright giddy -- gazing with approval at the 2014 selection, and even sharing secrets on his ripped body CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reported.
"He gained 20 pounds of muscle and sleeps naked!" said one student.
Others had different ideas on who should have been picked -- from the likes of actor and comedian Kevin Hart and actor Shemar Moore, of "Criminal Minds," to the infamous Danny Devito.
Who else would residents have voted for?
"(McLogan: You don't think Chris Hemsworth deserves it?) I think he's cute, but my husband is the sexiest man alive," one woman said.
"I always thought George Clooney was the sexiest man alive," said one shopper.
"Burt Reynolds is my man!" said another shopper.
"Our husbands -- John and Anthony D'Amato. (Oh? They're brothers?) Yes!" two women told McLogan.
And now just like Hemsworth, some of these nominees are probably wondering if they too can ask to be exempt from doing dishes and laundry for the next year.
Two other men made the cover this year. People magazine said actors Idris Elba and Chris Pratt are so sexy they had to share the spotlight, CBS2 reported.
