China's Li Na 1st Seeded Woman To Lose At US Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Eighth-seeded Li Na of China was knocked out in the first round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday, losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to 59th-ranked Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine.
Li is the first seeded woman to lose in the tournament. She had reached at least the fourth round in each of her three most recent trips to Flushing Meadows and was a semifinalist at the Australian Open in January.
In 16 previous major tournaments, Bondarenko has made it past the third round only once — when she got to the quarterfinals at the 2009 U.S. Open. She entered Tuesday with a 5-12 record this season and missed three months with a sprained left knee.
