AG: High Levels Of Lead Found In Children's Jewelry Kits Sold In NY
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- High levels of lead were reportedly found in parts of jewelry-making kits for children sold by major retailers in New York State.
According to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, exceedingly high levels of lead were found in Cra-Z-Art jewelry-making sets manufactured by LaRose Industries. The sets were sold at several major retailers, including K-Mart, Target and Toys-R-Us locations in New York City, Syracuse, Buffalo and on Long Island.
The products were also sold at local retailers in Rochester, as well as in Walmart and on Amazon.
According to officials, some Cra-Z-Art products tested contained lead levels of 120 to 980 parts-per-million -- almost 10 times the 100 ppm limit that is federally approved for children.
The Shimmer N' Sparkle Cra-Z-Art Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations Ultimate Gem Machine, Shimmer N' Sparkle Cra-Z-Art Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations Gem Charm and Slider Bracelets and the My Look Cra-Z-Art Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations Ultimate Gem Machine are all affected.
Schneiderman is now calling for these companies to issue a national recall of the products in question.
"Manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers all have a responsibility to ensure that products intended for use by children are safe," Schneiderman said in a release on Friday.
Scheiderman's office is also planning to investigate how these products made it to store shelves, given their lead contents.
