4-Year-Old Child Who Was Reported Missing In Manhattan Found Safe

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 4-year-old child who was reported missing Wednesday morning has been found safe.

Police say around 9 a.m., a woman approached officers at the 59th Street and Lexington Avenue subway station in Manhattan and told them something to the effect of "my child was with me, now she's not."

The woman said she left her Harlem home with the 4-year-old girl and took the train. The woman claimed the child wandered away on the platform and was last seen heading toward the 4 train.

According to police, the woman seemed erratic and her story changed several times.

As cops began to search for the child, the woman accompanied officers to her home but refused to open the door. Officers forced the door open and found a 12-year-old boy home alone.

The boy told police that he does have a 4-year-old sister, but he didn't know where she was.

Police say they later learned that the mother had dropped the 4-year-old girl off with a babysitter earlier in the day. The child was found with the babysitter in good health.

The woman was initially taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, but the charges were later dropped.

The mother was taken to the hospital.
