WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reports
The 8,000 runners who raised money for charity brought in a $30 million.
New York Road Runner's club spokesman Richard Finn says this is good for the marathon, good for the charities, and good for the runners.
"This really taps into the desire of so many of our runners to run for a purpose beyond themselves," Finn told WCBS 880 reporter Peter Haskell.
Runners who can't gain entry through the lottery system can run for a charity and raise at least $2,500.
