Cha-Ching! A-Rod, Revis Make Forbes' List Of 100 Highest-Paid Athletes
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Alex Rodriguez may not be the most popular guy in MLB circles. But according to Forbes, the Yankees slugger got the last laugh -- at the bank.
Rodriguez, recently voted among his peers as the second-most hated player in baseball, was tops in his sport at No. 18 overall in the magazine's list of the 100 highest-paid athletes.
A-Rod made $33 million between June 2011 and June 2012, including $2 million in endorsements, Forbes reported.
Controversial boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. lived up to his "Money" nickname atop the leaderboard with $85 million in earnings. Rival fighter Manny Pacquiao came in second ($62 million) and golfer Tiger Woods was third ($59.4 million).
Forbes' calculations over the 12-month span "included salaries, bonuses, prize money, appearance fees, as well as licensing and endorsement income." Taxes and fees from agents were not deducted.
Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis was among 30 NFL players on the list. Though New York fans worry he'll hold out of training camp again this summer, it seems the 26-year-old didn't have such a bad year. His $28.3 million was good enough to rank 22nd, second-highest among Tri-State area sports stars behind A-Rod's bounty.
The Mets' top earner was Johan Santana with $23.8 million. Not to be outdone, the Yankees matched aces with CC Sabathia ($23.8 million) tied for No. 40.
New York had no shortage of notable wealthy athletes. Giants quarterback Eli Manning also made Forbes' list at No. 30. Following the two-time Super Bowl champ was Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter (36), Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (38), Knicks forwards Carmelo Anthony (44) and Amar'e Stoudemire (46), Bombers first baseman Mark Teixeira (45), Gang Green offensive lineman D'Brickashaw Ferguson (63) and Nets guard Deron Williams (84).
