113-Year-Old Tombstone Found In Woman's Jersey City Backyard
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A local woman has made a bizarre -- and spooky -- discovery in her backyard.
As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported Tuesday, Angela Posey is scared to even walk through her yard after discovering an old tombstone on Sunday afternoon.
Posey rented the home three months ago and said she's worried about what else may be back there.
The tombstone for Michael Croswell is dated Oct. 27, 1900.
"Who would stay back here and have a cookout knowing that I got tombstones," Posey told Carrasco.
Just down the block about a few hundred feet away from Posey's lawn is Holy Name Cemetery and Mausoleum.
"That's his tombstone. It should be where he rests in peace at," Posey said.
Holy Name Cemetery declined to comment or confirm that the tombstone belongs to them, but workers were seen removing it from Posey's lawn just after CBS 2 left her home.
Posey said the tombstone is not all she's found in her backyard. She counted seven bumps.
"Look like if it was bodies in the ground," she told Carrasco.
Posey is convinced the seven large mounds in her backyard may also be part of some sort of burial ground.
However, property owner Harry Arkais offered a simple guess.
"The bumps are -- I do gardening back here," he told Carrasco.
Arkais said the tombstone was in his yard when he bought the home 12 years ago.
Posey said Jersey City police will bring sonar equipment in to check beneath the dirt for any human remains.
"When I have a cookout, I just got seven more people to feed. I don't know," Posey told Carrasco.
