Central Park Roadway Named After Former Mayor John Lindsay
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The lower loop of Central Park Drive is now "John V. Lindsay Drive."
In a renaming ceremony Monday, officials removed a cover to unveil a green street sign with white letters bearing the former mayor's name, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.
As mayor, Lindsay rode bicycles and horses through Central Park. In 1966, he closed the lower loop, which runs from West 72nd Street to East 72nd Street, to car traffic on summer weekends.

"This would mean more to him than anything in the world," said Lindsay's daughter, Margie. "He loved Central Park. He loved riding bikes. He was very athletic, as you know. When he closed this park (to car traffic), it was obviously tough to do, but it was probably one of the best things he ever did."
Lindsay served as mayor from 1966 to 1973. He died in 2000 at age 79.
Margie added that her father and mother "will be smiling down."
