Daughter Speaks On Hit-And-Run Death Of 86-Year-Old LI Man
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County Police are searching for a suspect after an 86-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash earlier this year.
Willie Dinkins was hit by a Honda Civic four-door sedan as he was walking along Suffolk Avenue, west of Wheeler Road in Central Islip at around 2 a.m. on Sept. 16, police say.
The driver then fled the scene. The side-view mirror from the driver's side of the vehicle was left at the scene, police said.
"This man lived 86 years just to get mowed down by a car," Dinkins' daughter, Diane, told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. "Not a sickness took him out of here -- he was just mowed over and left for dead in the street."
Dinkins, nicknamed "Walking Willie," was coming back from a trip to a local McDonald's to get some chicken nuggets before he hit.
A side-view mirror from the vehicle was left at the scene of the crash. Investigators believe the car, described as an early 2000s model, may have received damage to the driver's side in the crash.
Suffolk County police are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. Tips can remain anonymous.
