Celebration Ends In Tragedy, Jet Skiers Disappear Off Of Coney Island
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A July 4th celebration turned tragic in the waters off of Coney Island on Thursday when two jet skiers went missing.
A helicopter hovered overhead as CBS 2's Don Champion spoke with a witness who said that he tried to save them.
"I seen them going down, but it's a loss. I couldn't do nothing," Henry Collet said.
Witnesses were shocked by the accident.
"I just started screaming, I started dialing 911, and I started crying," Yessica Myrik said.
A man and a woman were riding a jet ski, when according to witnesses the woman fell off.
"She's just fighting up and down, he tried to reach for her but couldn't, so he jumped in the water and she was fighting him too so they both went under," Myrik said.
By the time Collet and a nearby police officer swam out to the struggling pair, they had already disappeared.
"We were just seeing the hands going up, the hands going up, and then eventually the hands stopped going up," Kenyatta Davis said.
