CCRB Chairman Apologizes For Comparing Police Unions To 'Squealing Pigs'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The chairman of the Community Complaints Review Board is apologizing over a controversial remark he made comparing NYPD unions to pigs.
Asked whether CCRB Chairman Richard Emery should resign over saying police unions were "squealing like a stuck pig," Mayor De Blasio said no.
Emery made the remark to The Daily News when discussing NYPD police unions trying to push him out of his position.
"I felt very clearly when I saw it that he needed to apologize, and I'm glad he's apologized," de Blasio said, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported.
De Blasio even went on to sing his appointees praises.
"Under Chairman Emery the CCRB is functioning a lot better. It is more fair to both community members and to police officers," de Blasio said.
Emery's apology said he would never use the word "pig" to refer to police officers. PBA President Pat Lynch said Emory cannot take back his words and called the apology "disingenuous at best."
"To the extent that anyone was offended by my poor choice of words, I apologize and want to make clear that nothing I said was directed at our superb public servants," Emery said.
Emery was appointed by de Blasio to serve as Chair of the CCRB in July 2014.
