CBS Sports: Steve Masiello Leaving Manhattan To Coach USF
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Manhattan Jaspers are suddenly without a head coach after winning the MAAC title and nearly upsetting Louisville in the NCAA tournament, according to CBSSports.com.
Steve Masiello was expected to leave for the University of South Florida, where he'd replace fired head coach Stan Heath, Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com reported Tuesday.
CBSSports.com's Jon Rothstein later tweeted that it was a "done deal." Masiello is the new head coach of the USF Bulls:
Masiello, 36, went 60-39 in three seasons with the Jaspers, including last week's near-upset of mentor Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals in the NCAA tournament. It was Manhattan's first appearance in the dance since 2004.
"That's one of the best coaching jobs that I have seen in my 39 years," Pitino said of Masiello, who led the Jaspers to the MAAC championship and an automatic tourney bid in 2014. "He just made us have to guard on the perimeter with four guards. … That's why I didn't want to play them, because I'm sick inside losing to one of my players."
USF fired Heath earlier this month after finishing the season 12-20.
Masiello's contract with the Bulls is worth more than $5 million over five years, CBSSports.com reported.
