CBS: Murphy Defeats McMahon In Testy Race For U.S. Senate In Connecticut
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy captured the race for U.S. Senate in Connecticut Tuesday, defeating Republican Linda McMahon, CBS News projected.
County results and exit polling showed Murphy with 65 percent of the vote, compared with 34 percent for McMahon.
The seat is being vacated by the retiring Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.)
The race between McMahon and Murphy was close and contentious. McMahon, a former professional wrestling executive, presented herself as a business leader up against a career politician.
Murphy was elected to the U.S. House of Representative in 2006, after serving in the Connecticut House and Senate.
McMahon lost her 2010 bid for Senate to Richard Blumenthal in the race to fill the seat vacated by Chris Dodd.
