CBS 2 Exclusive: Shoppers Scramble As Car Slams Into Jersey City Mall
JERSEY CITY, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- New Jersey shoppers scrambled to safety on Sunday, when a car drove through a building.
As CBS 2's Don Champion reported, the incident at the Hudson Mall was captured on cellphone video by a witness.
The car slammed through a front entrance just before 7 p.m. on Sunday.
"All of a sudden we heard skid marks. The minute we heard skid marks we just scattered like fish," witness Jonathan Nunez said.
"We were trying to get people inside because there were little kids who still didn't realize what was going on, and they were in the way," witness Gissell Lugo said.
Witnesses say the elderly driver first rammed into the entrance and kept on driving.
The whole thing ended when he crashed through the wall of a vacant store.
"He looked like he forgot everything, like maybe he was thinking it's a road or stop sign there, but he just kept going straight," Popeye's manager Judy Tugonon said.
In the video Tugonon can be heard trying to get people to safety, CBS 2's Champion reported.
"They're running around crazy, screaming, some of them were actually going towards the car, and I was like 'don't go towards the car, you don't know what he's capable of,'" she said.
Once stopped the driver was pulled out of the car.
Crews were boarding up the entrance to the mall on Sunday night. The driver was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but sources told CBS 2 that charges in the case were not expected.
There was no word on why the driver crashed into the mall, but investigators say they believe it was an accident.
