First On CBS 2: Man Killed In Alleged Love Triangle In Carteret, N.J.
CARTERET, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police were at the scene of a house in Carteret, New Jersey Thursday, where the body of a man was found following what was believed to be a stabbing during a domestic dispute.
As CBS 2's Christine Sloan reported, the body of Amaury Maldonado, 32, was found in the home located at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Clifford Street. He was pronounced dead shortly before 6 a.m., according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's office.
Police were initially dispatched to the scene around 4:30 a.m. in response to a domestic dispute. Investigators believe he entered the home where he was found and was stabbed, prosecutors said.
The home was that of Maldonado's estranged wife, family members told Sloan.
Two others, whom prosecutors did not identify, were able to leave the house.
Maldonado was a father of three. Family members said he was in the process of going through a messy divorce and was caught in the middle of a love triangle, Sloan reported.
CBS 2's Sloan talked exclusively to the victim's mother-in-law, Maria Guzman.
"I can't believe this is happening," Guzman sobbed.
Maldonado's estranged wife did not want to talk to CBS 2, but a cousin believes he showed up at the house jealous that another man was there.
"I know deep inside that she really loved him, and I'm pretty sure she didn't really have anything to do with this. It's all coming down to the guy that was there," said the cousin, Luis Cruz. "And this person that did this we – we've got a good idea of who it is. Let's hope the cops find him."
Neighbor said they did not see or hear anything unusual, but family members said the two had a troubled marriage.
"He was upset about the separation," Guzman said. "They just couldn't understand each other anymore, and she told him to leave, and I guess he just couldn't bear it – I don't know."
Family members said Maldonado was a hardworking man who lived for his children.
"His kids don't even know now, you know?" Cruz said. "He was good person. He didn't deserve to die like this, you know, and it's heartbreaking."
Prosecutors said no charges had been filed in the case as of late Thursday afternoon, and the investigation was ongoing.
Investigators were going door to door late Thursday afternoon to see if neighbors could provide them with any clues.
