Catholics Lobby In Albany As Abortion Fight Brews
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Catholic bishops are making their annual lobbying visit to Albany as Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Senate Republicans are starting to clash over the governor's abortion law proposal.
Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos said Cuomo's promise to strengthen abortion laws means abortion would be legalized until the day of birth.
Cuomo disagrees.
He said he would simply codify abortion rights under the federal Roe v. Wade court decision in the event the 1973 ruling is overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.
In a blog from Rome, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan said bishops will oppose stronger abortion laws. Dolan is in Rome for Tuesday's installation of Pope Francis.
Also on Tuesday in Albany, a woman who survived an abortion is holding a news conference with New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms.
