Carmelo Anthony Marches With Protesters In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Among the hundreds marching in Baltimore in support of Freddie Gray on Thursday was NBA star Carmelo Anthony, who moved to the city as a child.
"We're being heard. We've just got to be careful to do it the right way. We can't become violent ... we've got to be patient," said Anthony, the New York Knicks start who was born in Brooklyn.
The 30-year-old posted a message on Instagram earlier this week calling for calm in the city.
"Everybody saw what happened. It's out there. Everybody saw what happened," Anthony told WJZ-TV in Baltimore, referring to footage of Gray, who died in police custody. "Everybody has their opinions about it. We're going to get justice one way or the other. But we just gotta do it in the right way. We can't burn down our community. We still gotta go back to our communities even when all of this is over."
"This is my peoples, this is my family, this is my community, so it was only right for me to come here and lead this march down to city hall," he added.
Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, his players and former star linebacker Ray Lewis visited two Baltimore schools Thursday to help urge calm.
Violence escalated Monday after the funeral of Gray.
