NJ's Carli Lloyd Talks About Helping Secure World Cup Victory Against Germany
NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork) -- Team USA is one game away from a Women's World Cup trophy -- and New Jersey native Carli Lloyd is leading the way.
As CBS2's Christine Sloan reports, the soccer sensation who got her start at Rutgers University, helped secure the win against Germany with a penalty goal and an assist -- with only five minutes left in the game.
"I just got my focus ... zoned in ... cleared everything around me and all it was me and the ball," Lloyd said on CBS This Morning. "I knew I had to sink it to help my teammates to victory."
Lloyd had that same winning attitude when she played soccer at Rutgers University.
"Carli's always been a go to player but what stands out to me - but even better - she's a better person," said Meg Ryan, who used to play with Lloyd in 2004, is now a Rutgers Associate Head Coach.
Ryan said Lloyd was the last the leave practice and the first to help someone.
"Carli was unbelievable but that is who she is all the time when I played with her at Rutgers whenever we needed a big she was always the one we turned to," Ryan said.
Lloyd is still involved with the universeity -- and even gives back to her South Jersey town with various soccer camps.
Fans say she is a great American hero.
"Kids should emulate her - she's really exciting," said Debbie Biro of Colonia. "I think the whole thing is exciting if we win it."
The U.S. plays the winner of the Japan-England game. They lost the Japan in the last World Cup.
"I'll be ready to put up a fight no matter who the opponent is and I know my team will as well," Lloyd said. "You know it would be a cool kind of rematch game against Japan."
Soccer fans say, "bring it on!"
