Dolan cracked some jokes, saying he wanted to grab a hot dog and that he couldn't get a decent one in Rome. It's been an exhilarating week for Dolan, highlighted by Saturday's elevation ceremony in Saint Peter's basilica.

Dolan said that he is certainly glad to be back home.

"You know how much I love Rome, but still, you can't beat the good 'ole U.S.A," Dolan told reporters, including 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

After the Al Italia flight landed at John F. Kennedy Airport, Monseignor  Hilary Franco, of St. St. Augustine's Parish in Ossining, -- who was on the trip with the Cardinal -- spoke with the media.

"He was excited to come back, to be home, especially in New York. And also over there, everyone was talking about Cardinal Dolan -- the great Cardinal Dolan -- let me put it this way. He's a tremendous leader so he's going to do a great job," Franco told CBS 2's Ann Mercogliano.

Earlier, Dolan said his Vatican trip was exhausting, but has no plans to rest.

"It won't surprise you that I'm going to have to start to get to know my brother cardinals better," he said. "The different groups, those are things I'm going to have to get serious about."

Cardinal Dolan has a busy schedule the rest of the week. He will be serving breakfast to the homeless at St. Francis Assissi Church in midtown on Wednesday.

Then Saturday morning, there will be a big home-coming service followed by a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in the evening.
