Cameron Diaz On Letterman: I'll Tell You The Truth About Popcorn-Gate Starring A-Rod
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- During the Super Bowl broadcast back in February, actress Cameron Diaz was captured by Fox cameras feeding popcorn to former boyfriend Alex Rodriguez.
What followed was a story that took on a life of its own. A little red-faced, the Yankees' star third baseman reportedly even got a little annoyed about the whole thing.
Eventually, the story, like so many others of this nature, went away, but on Monday -- more than four months after the melodrama started -- Diaz attempted to have some fun with it during a taping of the "Late Show." While promoting her new film, "Bad Teacher," Diaz gave David Letterman the skinny on popcorn-gate starring A-Rod.
During the interview, Letterman held up the well-known photo of the actress and Rodriguez watching the Super Bowl, with the actress feeding the Yankees' star from a tub of popcorn.
"That's – you're feeding him." Letterman said. "That's at the Super Bowl."
"I'm a sharer," Diaz said.
"Because as a ballplayer…he can't run the risk of injuring his hands on popcorn," Letterman joked.
"You want to know the story, Dave?" Diaz said. "You get an exclusive. You get an exclusive. After all of this, I'll tell you exactly what was happening."
"We were watching the game, and I was eating, and I was getting down to, like, the last couple pieces of popcorn, and all of a sudden, I see a hand coming in. And I'm like – anybody who knows me does not put their hand in my food, especially when it's close to my mouth. And I said, 'What are you…?' And then I went, 'You know what? I love you too much. I'm going to give it to you. You deserve it.'"
"And it was the only piece of popcorn that I even put near his face, and they happened to have the camera on right when I did it. And then, of course, they got it, and then, 10 minutes later, we're blowing up on our BlackBerrys. We're like, 'What? What?' And we started laughing so hard, like, 'Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?'"
Letterman then handed Diaz a tub of popcorn to recreate the popcorn feeding moment, to loud audience applause.
