Business As Usual At Macy's In Herald Square Day After Basement Fire
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Macy's flagship store in Herald Square is open for business a day after a fire sent shoppers fleeing for the exits.
Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, a fire started up in a basement wall and quickly spread to the first floor.
A display window was shattered by firefighters to vent the smoke and stop flames from spreading.
The fire was confined to an area already closed to customers because of ongoing renovations.
No serious injuries were reported.
Fire marshals say the cause of the blaze was the "careless discard of smoking materials."
The store was evacuated for more than two hours.
