6 hurt in collision at Halloween event outside Bushwick, Brooklyn, police precinct
Six people were injured, including four that were hospitalized, after a collision during a Halloween event outside a police precinct in Bushwick, Brooklyn, on Thursday afternoon, the NYPD said.
It happened just before 4 p.m. at an event on Knickerbocker Avenue near Bleecker Avenue. The location is home to the 83rd Precinct, which was hosting a "Trunk-or-Treat" party to distribute candy.
Police said 56-year-old Michael Marsh of Brooklyn was drunk when he drove a black sedan onto the sidewalk along Bleecker, striking three adults and a child before hitting an ambulance parked in front of the location.
All of the people who were struck were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Marsh was hit with multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, police said.
It was supposed to be a fun afternoon of Halloween celebrations, but it turned into a frightening event for so many families. The crash happened while children were out trick-or-treating. The ambulance was left with damage to its side.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, saying the driver appeared to come out of nowhere before slamming into the ambulance.
"We turn around, we just hear a noise. All the ambulance trucks pushed back, and then a lady was just on the floor," one person said.
"A little boy, I don't know the age. One of the ladies dressed up in a costume giving out candy, and another girl, she looks like a teenager, but she was kind of under the car," another person said of the people who were injured.
"The impact was rough, like hard, like it pushed," a witness said. "It's also very traumatizing that all these kids had to experience this, especially my kids."
