While the bus was heading toward I-95 South after coming off the upper level of the bridge, a 16-year-old on the bus stuck his head through a hatch on the roof and as the bus traveled under the Fletcher Avenue overpass and the boy's head struck the bottom of it, Coleman said.
The teen was taken to Hackensack Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The 16-year-old boy lived in Sayreville, New Jersey, the Port Authority said.
There were a total of 65 young people on the bus. None of the others on board were injuries, according to the Port Authority.
The Port Authority is continuing to investigate.
