New Yorkers Are Now Allowed To Be Buried With Their Pets, Cuomo Says
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New Yorkers can now be buried with their furry best friends.
On Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that allows residents to be buried alongside their pets at not-for-profit cemeteries across the state.
"For many New Yorkers, their pets are members of the family," Cuomo said in a statement. "This legislation will roll back this unnecessary regulation and give cemeteries the option to honor the last wishes of pet lovers across New York."
The state legislature passed the measure earlier this year, allowing cemeteries to offer people the option of being buried with the cremated remains of their dog, cat or other domestic animal.
Cemeteries wouldn't be required to allow pet remains, and those seeking to be buried alongside their animal will need to receive written consent from the facility.
Religious cemeteries are not subject under the legislation.
