Buffalo College Suspends Frat After Brooklyn Student Dies In Possible Hazing Incident
BUFFALO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Buffalo college has suspended a fraternity following the death of a 21-year-old student in a possible hazing incident.
The president of Buffalo State College announced the suspension of Alpha Phi Alpha on Friday following the death Thursday night of Bradley Doyley of Brooklyn.
Doyley was hospitalized last month for an unexplained illness, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported. Police are looking into reports that Doyley may have been given something to drink that led to that fatal illness.
Buffalo State President Katherine Conway-Turner says the Buffalo police are investigating an allegation of hazing off campus. In the meantime, she says the fraternity has been suspended by both the college and the fraternity's national governing body.
Doyley was a former member of the men's basketball team at the college, which is part of the State University of New York system. He was on track to graduate this spring with a business degree.
The school's athletic department posted about the student's death on its website.
"He had a great spirit," said head coach Fajri Ansari. "We still considered him part of our family. He was a great teammate."
Alpha Phi Alpha hasn't responded to emailed requests for comment sent to its national headquarters.
