Buccaneers GM 'Honestly' Doesn't Know If Darrelle Revis Is On Market
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- So what's the deal with Darrelle Revis? Is he on the trading block or not?
That's the big question. Jets fans want to know -- and apparently so does Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik.
"I don't know if he really is, honestly," Dominik told SiriusXM NFL Radio this week from the league meetings, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. "That's a tough question for me to answer. You have to get (Jets GM) John Idzik on here and grill him about that."
The Buccaneers "are losing patience" and "have told people around the league they may have to look at other options at cornerback soon" if they can't strike a trade with the Jets for Revis, the New York Post reported earlier this week. The Jets have found only one "willing trade partner" — and that's the Bucs, according to the Post.
Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano had to stop himself on Wednesday when talking about facing Revis during his college days.
"We were backed up and Ray Rice popped a 60-something yard run," Schiano said, according to the New York Daily News. "And the guy who tracked him down was … was … I'm not even allowed to say his name."
Revis would strike a long-term deal with Tampa Bay "without much trouble" if the Jets and Bucs reach an agreement on compensation, the Daily News reported. Tampa Bay owns the No. 13 pick in the upcoming draft.
"I can't comment on guys under contract with another team," said Schiano. "I think anything we can do to help improve our football team, we're going to do. That's not just as simple as, 'This player is a good player and let's get him.' ... There's short-term thinking, there's long-term thinking, the grand plan of things."
Revis — widely considered the NFL's top cornerback — hasn't been on the field since suffering a torn ACL in September. The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season if he doesn't skip any mandatory team activities.
Revis will be looking to sign one of the league's most lucrative contracts for a defensive player — something the rebuilding Jets might not be willing to offer.
"I know for a fact that we're not actively trying to trade Darrelle Revis," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday. "At the same time, if somebody calls, you're going to listen."
Revis received a $1 million roster bonus from New York on Saturday.
