Brush Fire Leaves Acre After Acre Charred In Rockland County
RAMAPO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Helicopters dumped water Tuesday evening on a brush fire that spread to a wooded area in Rockland County.
The fire broke out at Harriman State Park Tuesday morning, leaving several acres charred. Thick smoke billowed from the scene for hours afterward, CBS 2 reported.
No injuries were reported and no homes were threatened.
The Journal News reported the fire spread to about 85 acres in the town of Ramapo by mid-afternoon Tuesday.
More than 100 firefighters from seven Rockland County departments and others from the region fought the flames on the ground. The fire spread onto county and Palisades Interstate Park land.
Hoses could not reach the remote area, so firefighters were using hand tools to contain the blaze.
