At the Edgewood Preserve in Deer Park, you can hear the dry ground cover and twigs crackling and snapping under your footsteps.
There are long stretches of scorched, brittle ground and blackened leafless trees where firefighters battled a brush blaze on Monday.
It was one of several over recent days being blamed on the hot and dry conditions.
Officials are urging the public, especially cigarette smokers, to be careful.
It won't take much to spark an inferno resulting in perhaps devastating, potentially deadly consequences.
