Brooklyn Youth Advocates Work To Curb Gun Violence
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Community leaders, youth advocates and the Brooklyn District Attorney attended a conference at St. Francis College Saturday, discussing ideas to prevent teenagers from being forgotten at school and to prevent young people from turning to gun violence.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Tony Herbert of the group Advocates Without Borders said curbing gun violence among youth is a crucial battle.
"We had a lot of shootings and issues regarding gun violence," Herbert said. "Everybody wants to ban assault weapons, but guns are still going off in our communities. There is a need for the village to step up and do something."
Herbert said they have big plans.
"Mentoring, parent counseling, peer-to-peer tutoring – we are going to occupy schools, and tell people, 'We are here. What is it you would like us to do?'" Herbert said.
