Brooklyn School Names Athletic Field In Honor Of Nelson Mandela
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Brooklyn high school has honored the memory of Nelson Mandela by naming its athletic field after the late South African leader.
According to published reports, former Mayor David Dinkins was on hand Friday to dedicate the renaming ceremony at Boys and Girls High School in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Mandela, who died in December at age 95, had visited the school 24 years ago.
Mandela's visit to the school came months after he was released from prison. City officials honored him with a ticker tape parade.
The so-called lion of South Africa would have turned 96 on Friday.
