Brooklyn Man Shot, Wounded In Apparent Robbery Attempt
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The search was on Thursday night for a gunman who shot a Brooklyn man as he walked to work earlier that morning.
Yang Chen, 62, was hit multiple times and is in critical condition at Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park, police said.
Chen was walking down a quiet, residential part of 62nd Street near Bay Parkway when he was attacked, police said.
"He was yelling 'you got me.' He was yelling so loud," neighbor Julia Ashirmetov said.
Chen left his Bensonhurst apartment around 4 a.m. and was on his way to his job at a local Chinese restaurant, where co-workers told CBS 2's Dave Carlin he was dedicated to his job, his wife, and his children.
"I hope the police find the guys who hurt him," co-worker David Long said.
Police believe the shooting was part of an attempted robbery. However, the victim still had his watch, his phone, and a wallet filled with cash on him when paramedics arrived on the scene.
Surveillance footage was not immediately available, but witnesses told police that the gunman was dressed in all black. Neighbors want the assailant brought to justice as soon as possible.
"It's scary because we have a lot of kids here," Ashirmetov said.
