Brooklyn Burger Joint Brings Back The 'Donut Burger'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Paula Deen's got some competition in Brooklyn.

The Burger Bistro in Bay Ridge has brought back their most popular (and likely most caloric) specialty: The Donut Burger.

The 100 percent Angus beef burger, topped with American cheese, bacon and a fried egg, is served on a glazed doughnut. It will be available at the restaurant until Sunday.

Created by restaurant co-owners John Agnello and Vincent Dardanello, the venue debuted the dish during the summer of 2010. Since then, it's come back for four brief, infrequent, highly anticipated appearances.

"It is the most requested special that we do by far,"  Agnello told CBSNewYork, noting that patrons inquire about the burger on a near-daily basis.

Despite the popular demand, the Burger Bistro isn't looking to make the Donut Burger a regular menu item.

"It's not so special if you can come and get it every day," Agnello said. "We like creating a little drama and intrigue to it."

The cholesterol-packed concoction certainly does stir emotions. Agnello recalled his favorite, non-verbal reaction to the dish.

A customer, after taking his first bite of the Donut Burger, got up from his seat and without saying a word, gave Agnello a hug.

"He just hugged me. That's  it," Agnello said. "And then we knew."

Beef patties on doughnut buns have been seen at state fairs and on cooking shows for years. Food Network star Paula Deen has her own take on the dish.

So what makes the Bistro's version different? Well, it may not be in the actual ingredients.

"I don't know that it's any different," Agnello said. "Other than the fact that when we put it down in front of ya, we're really expecting you to smile and be happy about."

At least until the calorie coma hits.
