Mervyn Johnson, 68, owner of Merv's Bakery on Nostrand Avenue, was walking to his apartment around 8:30 p.m. when he was confronted by a gunman at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard, police said.
Johnson was shot once in the head and his brother said the killer got away with $10. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
"So my brother lost his life for $10," Alvin Johnson said. "He was one of the best persons I ever had in the world."
A family friend said she saw Johnson Tuesday night shortly after he made a deposit at a local bank.
"When he got home there was no money on him," Ann Ahyung said.
Johnson ran the bakery for nearly 30 years and was known for his West Indian-style bread.
"You should see the lines in there all the time," one woman said. "Lines out the door, just waiting for his bread."
Friends say Johnson was planning on retiring to open a bakery in Trinidad.
Police said Johnson was the victim of a $50 mugging last Friday in the lobby of his apartment building. No arrests have been made in that case and police are investigating whether the two incidents are connected.
