Bronx Zoo Welcomes Pair Of Adorable Baby Sea Lions
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The Bronx Zoo officially welcomed the addition of two California sea lion pups that were born just a few weeks ago.
CBS2's Jill Nicolini was there for the big reveal.
"I think the babies are really sweet," one little girl visiting the zoo said.
The cute little sea lion pups were born just a few days apart in June, one from mother Indy and the other from Margeretta.
"This is doubly exciting because their father was rescued from the West Coast and he was slated to be euthanized-- so we got to save him and also he came here and contributed new genes to our population," Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny said.
The pups weighed in about 20 pounds at birth and females will grow to be about 250 pounds, while males can weigh up to four times as much.
"As far as we know, there's one male. We'are not sure of the sex on the other, but we're hoping the other is a female," Breheny said.
What do the kids like most about the lovable pups?
"Well, it's like they have no bones," visitor Adam said. "And they're so cute."
"I like how they do tricks, they jump around all the time," visitor Tom said.
"They are mostly known for their barking, the people who come to the Bronx Zoo love the sea lions 'cause they are always active and interacting," Breheny said.
That's why adults and especially children love to crowd around the Sea Lion Pool for the twice daily feeding that happens at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The two sea lion pups have yet to be named, but the Bronx Zoo said they'll eventually find names that are fitting for their personalities.
The animals are not a threatened or endangered species and can live well into their 20s.
