Bronx Week 2016 Celebrates Best Of The Borough
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The 45th annual Bronx Week is bringing festivities and fun to the borough this weekend.
The 11-day event, which kicked off this week, includes food, concerts, fairs, parades, performances and more.
"Bronx Week is one of my favorite times of the year, because the entire borough celebrates together as it showcases the best of the borough," Bronx Tourism Council Executive Director Olga Luz Tirado said in a statement.
"This is a time when we celebrate everything that is fantastic about The Bronx. From new developments to the diversity in our borough and from delicious restaurants to great drinks, there is so much happening and so much to do," Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a statement.
At the end of the celebration, actor Vincent Pastore, award-winning animator and director Peter Sohn, author Arlene Alda and artistic director of Ballet Hispanico Eduardo Vilaro will all be inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame.
Pastore put his roots down in the Bronx years ago and Marco Greco from the renowned Mike's Deli on Arthur Avenue gave him his start.
"Marco got me involved in acting," Pastore told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa. "I used to take the 6 train into the city and go on auditions. There's a lot of wise guys in Pelham Bay and that's why I was able to study these guys."
Movie roles and Pastore's famous part on "The Sopranos" came out of that.
Vilaro said it all started for him at St. Margaret Mary's in the school play.
"I took over a role that had to dance and sing and I was hooked," he said.
Diaz said all the nominees have one thing in common.
"Wherever they go in the entire planet, you say. 'I am proud to say I am from the Bronx,'" he said.
