Girl, 16, Found Shot To Death In Bronx Apartment
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A teenage girl was found shot to death Thursday evening in the Claremont section of the Bronx.
As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, it was a mystery late Thursday as to why the girl had been shot, and even who she was in relation to the other residents in the building.
Around 6:15 p.m., police were called to the building at 363 E. 171st St., just west of Claremont Park, for a report of a shooting.
They found the 16-year-old girl with a gunshot to the face on the fourth floor of the building, sources said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"No, I don't know her. I know nothing," one area resident said. "I was out here with the dogs when the first car pulled up."
Following the shooting, a man was taken away by police in handcuffs, while three others were led away by detectives for questioning.
Police said there were several people in the apartment at the time, and many had different stories about what happened.
Police said the victim was visiting the apartment at the time. Investigators spent most of the night combing the apartment for evidence because it was not clear whether the gunshot was self-inflicted or if the girl was a homicide victim.
"I think it's horrible, but everything horrible happens around here," said neighbor Carmen Velez as she leaned out her window.
Police late Thursday were unable to find the gun, which appeared to be missing from the apartment. Residents were from coming and going at the building as the officers searched for the gun.
"They're just keeping people out of the building -- stay in or go out," a resident said.
The identity of the girl had not been released late Thursday. Police were still questioning people in the apartment to figure out exactly what happened, and the New York City Medical Examiner's office was also investigating.
