Bronx H.S. Teacher Arrested, Charged With Raping Student
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - For the second time in a week, a Bronx public school teacher has been arrested for allegedly raping a student.
According to police, Brian Kearins, 33, was arrested just after midnight on charges of rape, criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child.
His victim was a 16-year-old girl, police said.
"Family members had learned of inappropriate e-mail or communication between the two and brought it to the attention of the high school principal, who called the police. And upon further investigation, we found evidence that led to the charges, including rape," NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told WCBS 880.
Kearins was a teacher at Lehman High School for nearly a decade, according to the Department of Education.
A DOE spokeswoman said Kearins has been removed from the school reassigned away from students as they seek his termination.
The arrest comes just a week after another Bronx teacher, Anthony Criscuolo, was arrested and charged with allegedly raping a 10-year-year-old student.
Criscuolo, 40, was charged with two counts of predatory sexual assault against a child, two counts of rape in the first degree, three counts of sexual abuse in the first degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
