Amtrak Service Restored After Freight Train Derailment In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A CSX freight train derailed in the Bronx Wednesday morning, disrupting Amtrak service.
The derailment took place around 9:15 a.m. in the Oak Point rail yard near Bruckner Boulevard and Longwood Avenue in Hunts Point, CSX said in a statement.
Eight freight cars derailed. Seven were empty, and one contained lumber, CSX said.
No injuries were reported, and there were no reports of any hazardous materials involved, according to CSX.
One of the overturned freight cars sprawled across the Amtrak tracks, causing the delays in service.
"Safety is CSX's highest priority, and our goal is zero accidents. CSX will work to identify the cause of this accident as part of the recovery effort, and any lessons learned will be applied to future operations," the company said in a statement. "CSX apologizes to Amtrak passengers and any others who have been inconvenienced by this event."
Northeast Regional and Acela Express service between New York and New Rochelle was suspended Wednesday morning due to the derailment, but was partially restored by the afternoon. Service was fully restored Wednesday night.
Passengers at Penn Station who were stuck waiting expressed their frustrations to CBS2's Jessica Moore.
"We arrived an hour early, and they wouldn't let us get on the early train because it was an extra $250, and now we're stuck for an indefinite delay," one delayed passenger told Moore.
"I'm just a bit concerned that we don't know what else we should be doing. Trying to listen to the announcements, trying to work out what's happened, that's all," another delayed passenger said.
"Waiting for two hours, unfortunately it's delayed. So far, we have no further news," one man said. "Just waiting."
CSX worked through the day on cleaning up the derailed cars. The FDNY said it will be an extensive cleanup.
