Bronx Fire Kills 3 Small Children, Including 4-Month-Old Baby
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tragedy hit the Bronx on Friday night. Three young boys were killed after a fire broke out inside of their apartment.
The blaze began just before 8 p.m. at 64 W. 165th St. in the Highbridge section of the borough and around 100 firefighters responded, but it was too late for two boys and a baby, CBS 2's Steve Langford reported.
Elijah and Jeremiah Artis, ages 5 and 2, respectively, were pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital, officials said. The baby, 4-month-old Michael Turner, did not make it out of the building alive.
A combination of smoke inhalation and burns left the family from apartment 2C devastated. In addition to the three dead children, at least two adults and another child suffered injuries in the blaze, Langford reported.
Residents said this was not the first time a fire had started in the building.
"This is my second fire you understand, 'cause I got burnt out in 2009. I'm kinda scared. Third one, might not make it," one woman said.
Fire units had their hands full as they fought the blaze while trying to evacuate occupants from inside of the building.
