Broadway Sets New Records With 2010-2011 Season
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - Shows such as the runaway hit The Book of Mormon, longtime favorites Wicked and The Lion King, and even the much-troubled Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark helped lift Broadway to new heights this year.
42 new shows opened during the season (14 musicals, 25 plays, and 3 specials). That's the second most in 24 years.
"I think one of the reasons why we broke so many records is that we have such diverse offerings on Broadway," says the Broadway League's Charlotte St. Martin. "Something for the teeners, the tweeners, the twenty-somethings."
Attendance was up 5.4 percent to 12,534,595 compared with last season.
Broadway shows grossed a record $1,080,562,880.

The average ticket price is also up from last season to $86, although the hits can cost $300 and up for the best seats.
