Broad Daylight Double Homicide Leaves Hempstead Community On Edge

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A quiet Long Island neighborhood was rocked by gunfire and a broad daylight double homicide on Monday.

As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, two men were shot and killed outside of a house on Belmont Parkway in Hempstead around 1 p.m. Monday.

One of the victims was pronounced dead on a lawn of a home. The second was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbors said the double killing was a shock in their community.

"It's quiet," one resident told Xirinachs. "You don't really hear anything really going on over here. So for that to happen down here, it's a little...it's very odd. Especially right around the corner from the public schools."

"I've been living here for 22 years and this is the first time it happened," another neighbor said.

"Makes you think what the world is coming to. You just always have to be aware of your surroundings and you just have to keep your kids a little bit closer," said another neighbor.

After the killings, heavily armed police were in what they believed was a 12-hour stand-off with the suspect in a house, but when they finally entered the home they found no one.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information on the shooter.

Police have so far refused to discuss a possible motive.
