Boy Headed To Boarding School After East Harlem Shopping Cart Drop
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 13-year-old who helped push a shopping cart that fell onto a New York City woman has been sentenced to a therapy-oriented boarding school.
A Manhattan Family Court judge decided Tuesday the boy should spend six to 16 months in the program. She could later extend his stay.
The boy and a friend pleaded guilty to assault charges in juvenile court in the Oct. 30 stunt at a shopping mall. Both 12-years-old at the time, the pair pushed the cart off the fourth-floor walkway of an East Harlem parking garage.
Marion Hedges, 47, was seriously injured. Her husband, Michael Hedges, said she wife will require months of rehabilitation due to neurological damage.
The 13-year-old later wrote her an apologetic letter, calling his actions stupid.
Officials say he had a history of problematic behavior, including trying to run down schoolmates on his bicycle. His mother says she's glad he's getting help.
The other boy is awaiting sentencing.
